How to play this piece placement puzzle
- Tap a piece in your hand to pick it up. The strip under your hand lists every piece still to come, in order.
- Tap the board to aim it. The piece is drawn where it will land, with what it would score and whether it clears a quarter. Tap the aimed piece again, or press Place, to put it down.
- A 4×4 quarter clears when all 16 of its squares are full. Rows and columns never clear, and gray blocks only leave with the quarter they sit in.
- Meet the goal above the board, such as filling the gold-starred quarter, before the pieces run out.
With a mouse you can hover to preview and click to place, or drag a piece from your hand onto the board. With a keyboard, Tab moves between pieces and squares, the arrow keys move around the board, Enter or Space aims and then places, and Escape puts a piece down. Pieces never rotate: each comes in the orientation shown.
You get one undo per level, as in the app’s free tier, and Restart is always free. Every color also has its own symbol, so the board never depends on telling colors apart.
Tips for a puzzle where you plan every move
- Read the strip before the first placement. You know every piece that is coming, so you can save a gap for the one that fits it.
- Build a quarter, not a line. A full row does nothing; a full quarter clears and scores a quarter bonus.
- Keep pieces inside one quarter where you can. A piece that straddles two quarters leaves awkward holes in both.
- Clearing two quarters with one piece is worth more than clearing them one at a time, and back-to-back clears build a streak multiplier.
More technique is in the Quarterfill sequence planning guide.
It tells you when a level can no longer be won
Every level is proved solvable from its start. After each placement the real solver checks, within a small budget, whether a finish is still possible from where you stand, and if it proves there is none, the board says so: undo a placement or restart. It never guesses; if it cannot settle the question in time, it says nothing.
What the Quarterfill app adds
The app keeps the rest: all 200 proved levels, one Daily for everyone with one ranked attempt and its leaderboard, Gauntlet, records, drag or tap placement, and the full sound and visuals. The first 20 levels, the tutorial and the ranked Daily are free with no ads, lives or timers; the $4.99 full unlock or the StackForge Play Pass opens all 200 levels, unlimited undo off the ranked Daily, and solver-backed hints.
Plan-ahead block puzzle questions
What is a plan-ahead block puzzle?
It is a piece placement puzzle where you can see what is coming. In Quarterfill every level shows its whole piece sequence, in order, before you place the first one, and you hold three at a time. Nothing is random, so each level is a plan to work out rather than a run to survive.
How do I play Quarterfill here?
Tap a piece in your hand, tap the board to aim it, and tap the aimed piece again to place it. With a mouse, hover to preview and click to place, or drag it. The board is four 4×4 quarters, and a quarter clears only when all 16 of its squares are full; rows and columns never clear. Meet the goal above the board before the pieces run out.
Is this the Quarterfill Daily?
No. These are the first 20 levels of the app's campaign, the ones that are free in the app too. The Daily is one board for everyone with one ranked attempt, and it stays in the app so nobody can practise the ranked board first. Nothing you do on this page is ranked.
Do I need an account or an install?
Neither. The puzzle runs in this page, you can retry any level as often as you like, and nothing about your play is sent anywhere. Your best scores are kept only in this browser.
Are there ads, lives or timers?
No. The browser puzzle is free with no ads, and the Quarterfill app has no ads, lives or timers. In the app the first 20 levels, the tutorial and today's ranked Daily are free; the $4.99 full unlock or the StackForge Play Pass opens all 200 levels, unlimited undo off the ranked Daily, and hints.
