What is a word ladder?

A word ladder starts with one word and ends at another. On each step, or rung, you change exactly one letter, and every rung has to be a real word. Lewis Carroll published them as Doublets in 1879, and the idea has stayed the same since: find the shortest chain of real words between two ends.

The fun is in the detours. COLD to WARM looks impossible until you see COLD, CORD, CARD, WARD, WARM.

How Wordward plays

Tap a tile in your current word, then tap a letter to replace it. Valid words commit and junk shakes. Every daily ships with par: the shortest path, verified by search against an accepted list of more than 5,800 four-letter words. Match par on your first pass, without undoing or a hint, for a PERFECT. One over is GREAT, two over is GOOD.

Everyone gets the same ladder each day, with a new one at 00:00 UTC, so the emoji share grid means something in a group chat. Difficulty follows the week, from gentle early-week ladders to a tough Saturday.

What is free and what is paid

Free play includes today's Daily, three practice ladders a day, one hint per puzzle, the last three archive days, your last ten solves, streaks, the share grid and the leaderboard.
